About
"R-Type" is a side-scrolling shoot-'em-up developed by Japanese company Irem and released in 1987, originally in arcades before being ported to multiple platforms including the Game Boy. Players pilot the R-9 spacecraft to combat the powerful alien lifeform "Bydo" threatening humanity. The title's name derives from r/K selection theory, referencing the Bydo's r-selection reproductive strategy of producing vast numbers of offspring without regard to individual quality or survival. A defining feature is the "Force" system: a floating orb that can attach to or detach from the ship, offering multiple attack modes and the ability to block enemy bullets. Skillful use of the Force lies at the heart of the gameplay. The original "R-Type" is renowned for its high difficulty, requiring players to learn level design through repeated attempts and accumulated experience. The series has remained popular among hardcore shoot-'em-up fans, spawning numerous sequels and ports across many consoles, with new entries released well into the 21st century.
