Pokémon Crystal Version is a second-generation entry in the Pokémon series, released in Japan on December 14, 2000, with subsequent launches in North America and Europe the following year. The Game Boy Color title is an enhanced version of Pokémon Gold and Silver. The main setting is the Johto region, and players can travel to Kanto after completing the main quest. Compared to its predecessors, Crystal adds new story content centered on capturing Suicune and, for the first time in the series, introduces an optional female protagonist. Mechanically, Crystal is similar to Gold and Silver but adds features like animations for select Pokémon and revised sprites for certain species. The game also introduces a day-and-night cycle and seasonal changes that affect the wild Pokémon encountered and battle strategies. On January 26, 2018, the game was re-released worldwide on the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console, with compatibility for Pokémon Bank allowing players to transfer their Crystal Pokémon into the latest core titles.
