Contra, also known as Operation C, is a run-and-gun shooter developed and published by Konami for the Game Boy on January 8, 1991. It is the third entry in the Contra series, set between Super Contra and Contra: Hard Corps. In the year 2635, Earth's Federation forces discover that a hostile nation is developing a powerful weapon using alien cells on a remote South Pacific island. To eliminate the threat, Corporal Bill Rizer of the Contra unit is dispatched to infiltrate the base and destroy the facility along with all alien life. The game builds on the systems of the NES Contra and Super Contra, adding an auto-fire function when holding the B button, faster bullets, and an increased on-screen bullet cap from four to five. Weapons include the Spread Shot (S), which returns to its Super C arcade-tier behavior, plus a new homing missile (H) that tracks enemies like a level-one Spread. Despite the Game Boy's monochrome display, the visuals hold up well against the NES originals. Players can freely select from the first four stages before advancing to the final mission.
