The Sega Game Gear is Sega's 8-bit handheld, released in Japan on October 6, 1990, in North America and Europe in April 1991, and Australia in 1992. Designed as a portable Master System, it technically outclassed Nintendo's Game Boy with a landscape full-color backlit screen and a more powerful Z80 CPU. However, these advanced features came at a steep cost: 3-5 hours on 6 AA batteries versus 30+ hours on Game Boy's 4 AAs. Despite the color advantage, it sold 10.62 million units globally — only about a tenth of Game Boy's sales — failing to dislodge Nintendo's handheld dominance.
