The Atari Lynx is a pioneering handheld game console released by Atari in North America in September 1989, followed by Europe and Japan in 1990, making history as the world's first handheld game device with a color LCD screen. Originally priced at $179.95 in the US (about $460 in 2024), the technologically advanced Lynx featured a backlit 3.5-inch LCD with 160×102 pixel resolution capable of displaying up to 16 colors per scanline, a massive visual leap over the monochrome Game Boy that dominated the handheld market. Despite selling 90% of an initial 50,000-unit shipment in its first month, the Lynx struggled against Nintendo's more affordable and battery-efficient Game Boy, with lifetime sales estimated between 1 and 3 million units. In 1993, Atari began diverting resources away from the Lynx to prepare the Jaguar home console, and support for this pioneering handheld officially ended in 1995.
