NeoGeo Pocket Games
SNK NeoGeo Pocket / NGPThe Neo Geo Pocket is a monochrome handheld console developed by SNK, released only in Japan and Hong Kong on October 28, 1998 at a retail price of ¥7,800. The console launched with eight games, headlined by The King of Fighters R-1, a streamlined fighting game adaptation of SNK's popular arcade series featuring innovative card-collecting mechanics alongside traditional combat. The Neo Geo Pocket was designed as a portable extension of SNK's legendary Neo Geo arcade platform, targeting fighting game enthusiasts with high-quality arcade-style experiences. However, the console faced severe market challenges from the start. Released just days after Nintendo's Game Boy Color in October 1998 and months before Bandai's WonderSwan in March 1999, the monochrome Neo Geo Pocket struggled to stand out in an increasingly color-focused handheld market. Total sales during its brief lifetime reached only about 52,000 units.
