NEC PC Engine / TurboGrafx-16

The PC Engine (marketed as TurboGrafx-16 in North America) is a fourth-generation home console developed by Hudson Soft and manufactured by NEC, released in Japan on October 30, 1987 and in North America on August 19, 1989. Despite being marketed as a 16-bit system in North America, it actually featured an 8-bit CPU with dual 16-bit graphics processors — a technical specification that drew criticism for misleading branding. The PC Engine made history as the first video game console to use CD-ROM as a storage medium, with the CD-ROM² add-on selling 60,000 units in Japan in its first five months. The console achieved massive success in its home market, selling 500,000 units in its first week and over 1.2 million by 1989, ultimately reaching nearly 11 million units in Japan — second only to the Super Famicom.
