Sony PSP / PlayStation Portable

The PlayStation Portable (PSP) is Sony's first handheld game console, released in Japan on December 12, 2004, in North America on March 24, 2005, and in Europe on September 1, 2005. It packed a 32-bit MIPS Allegrex CPU at 222 MHz with a 4.3-inch LCD screen (480×272), making it the most powerful handheld at launch. It introduced the Universal Media Disc (UMD) format — 60mm optical discs holding 1.8GB — making it the only handheld to use optical media as primary storage. Sony CEO Ken Kutaragi called the PSP the "Walkman of the 21st century," emphasizing multimedia features including video playback, music, photo viewing, and web browsing. The PSP sold over 80 million units worldwide, becoming one of the most successful non-Nintendo handhelds.
