Game Boy / Color

The Game Boy Color, launched in Japan on October 21, 1998, was Nintendo's evolutionary upgrade of the original Game Boy, bringing vibrant color to handheld gaming. This 8-bit handheld featured a color TFT screen capable of displaying 56 colors simultaneously from a palette of 32,768, twice the CPU speed and four times the memory of the original. Its killer feature was full backward compatibility with the original Game Boy's 600+ game library. Enhanced games could use the extra memory for richer graphics. The system introduced an infrared port for wireless communication between two units within 2 meters. Combined with the Game Boy, the platform sold 118.69 million units. Standout library: Pokémon Gold/Silver (23 million), Link's Awakening DX, Oracle of Ages/Seasons, Super Mario Bros. Deluxe, Wario Land 3, Dragon Quest Monsters.
