Virtual Boy
Virtual Boy

The Virtual Boy, launched in Japan on July 21, 1995 and in North America on August 14, 1995, is Nintendo's most notorious commercial failure and a cautionary tale of ambition meeting technological immaturity. This 32-bit portable game system was the world's first gaming system capable of displaying stereoscopic 3D graphics, using an oscillating mirror system to convert 224 red LEDs into a 384×224 pixel display per eye, creating depth perception through parallax. After four years of development under the codename VR32, the Virtual Boy was rushed to market in an unfinished state so Nintendo could focus resources on the upcoming Nintendo 64. The console's fatal flaws proved insurmountable: the monochrome red-and-black display (chosen only for cost reasons) caused severe eye strain and headaches, while the tabletop design eliminated true portability despite being sold as portable.
